Bookworm Babies began in 2008, which the government declared to be a National Year of Reading. One of its aims was to get every parent reading to their child for ten minutes a day as ministers have said that “One of the most important things a parent can do to boost the educational chances of their child is to read to them.” In fact reading to your baby or toddler is probably the single biggest thing you can do to aid their development. Over last four years, Bookworm Babies has visited many playgroups, book fairs, schools, nurseries, sports clubs, tea parties, book festivals, social evenings and coffee mornings to spread the reading message!
Current promotions from
Bookworm Babies include a
'Buy five books and get a sixth free'
offer; and the gift of a hardback book to all Bookworm coffee morning hosts.
What's New for 2012?
This year is the 200th anniversary of Dickens' birth, but Claire Tomalin, (acclaimed biographer of Dickens) warned that we were raising a generation of children who wouldn't be able to read his books as they couldn't concentrate for long enough! Reading little and often to very young children, will help them to build up their appetite for longer stories when they are older. School Minister Nick Gibb recommended that every child should always have a book "on the go" - the difference between the abilities of those who read in their spare time and those who don't can be as much as a year's schooling! Another good reason to get your little ones into the reading habit early on!
